- Dear Great Granny.
-
Is it okay for my 3 year old son to be infatuated with my nieces Barbie
dolls? She lives next door and he is constantly playing and carrying them
around with him. He does seem a little ...how should I say this sensitive.
Is this something that I should be worried about?
Dear worried parent,
I'm more worried about your reaction than about your baby's choice of toys. If his next door cousin was constantly playing with a toy truck, your son would want to have one too. It's his way of wanting to take part in what's going on. Those little dolls are cute, easy to hold. Let him have his fun. If your neighbours, or family members, are raising their eybrows and whispering, send them to a psychiatrist.
As for your son being sensitive. Rejoice! To have sensitive children is everyone's fondest dream. You are veiled suggestion is that because he is sensitive, and plays with his cousin's doll he might be effeminate. Well, my dear, you'll have to sort out in your mind what you really mean by that. My best advice to you is to let your child choose his own toys, and thank God he is sensitive. Too many kids aren't. You are blessed.
Yours sincerely,
GG
