Approval from your parents isn't necessary but it certainly is considerate. This applies to both sets of parents.
Introduce your parents to your intended spouse and then tell them that you are planning marriage. If they feel that you should have told them earlier, just be honest with them and tell them that you weren't sure how to break the news.
Don't expect everyone to be thrilled with the notion at first but try to arrange other meetings together so they will all have an opportunity to learn of each others' great personalities.
Don't appologize for your parents, or to your parents. Make sure that in YOUR mind they are all great people and must get along.
