Granny's Advice By Rosaleen Dickson, BA, MJ
- Dear Great Granny.
-
My husband and I are expecting our first baby in 5 weeks. We are having trouble deciding
what our child will call our parents. He has a Dad and Stepmom which we plan to call Grandma
and Grandpa, My Mom and Step-Dad are going to be called Nana and Papa. The problem
lies with what to call his Mom. Do you have any suggestions? Your help would be greatly
appreciated since this topic is causing a lot of stress in our family.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Respectfully.

If what to call Granny is causing you stress, I'm beginning to feel sorry for that little baby you
are going to raise. Please don't get so worked up about such an unimportant matter. When
your child begins to speak he, or she, will think of something to call his grandparents and
it might be "gamps" or even their first names. Whatever it is, don't get upset, it's not worth it.
The relationship is more important than the name. In the meantime, the baby can't talk anyway,
but you are wondering what YOU will call them.
So, you've decided on Nana and Papa - that's sweet. and your husband's parents will be
Grandma and Grandpa - totally appropriate. So if you want to differentiate between all of those
and your baby's real paternal grandmother, I'd suggest Granny.
Yours truly,
GG
