Granny's Advice By Rosaleen Dickson, BA, MJ
- Dear Great Granny.
-
Hello, we have just received great news in that we are going to become
grandparents next spring. My daughter-in-law's mother has grandchildren
from another child and they refer to her as Nanna and their grandfather who
has a Jewish background is Zaidi. We would like to know other names
other than Grandma and Grandpa that we can be called, all in a good sense
of course. Can you offer any suggestions. Thank you so much.

I guess I have no imagination because 15 people call me Granny.
One of my great grandsons calls me Rosaleen because he likes to say that
name.
You will define what they call you by who you are. Some people call
their grandparents by their first names. If you have a Dutch background
you will have ready-made names, Opa and Oma. I think your best bet is to
just let them call you what they will - the decision will be made by
your daughter-in-law anyway. Whatever way she introduces you to her new
baby will probably stick, unless you specifically ask her to call you
something else.
Some people like to talk baby-talk with grandchildren. If that's your
choice you could get them to call you "gammy" or "gwammy" or some such
thing that people use who can't pronounce certain consonents. I've heard
"ganny" too, and "gramps". Some cultures call grandpaprnts "Papa" and
"Mama".
But, why not just be "granny" - it works for me!
Truly yours, GG
